Making your own deodorant at home is actually an easy task once you have the appropriate recipe and ingredients. By making your own deodorant you will not only save time and money, but you will also make sure that you are fully aware of all the ingredients that go into the mixture, so that you don’t have surprises. There are plenty of natural deodorants that you can buy from stores, but many of them prove to be ineffective, so making your own seems like a much better idea.

In this article we will show you the most used DIY deodorant recipes.

Usually, the main ingredient found in all homemade recipes is baking soda, which absorbs moisture. Some people actually recommend applying ONLY baking soda to your armpits, but that isn’t such a great idea.

The sodium bicarbonate will absorb the wetness from your skin, leaving it dry and with possible rashes. This is the reason why the second ingredient should be coconut oil. This natural oil is well-known for plenty of health benefits, including skin care related ones.

First Recipe

  • 5 teaspoons of coconut oil
  • 4 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 4 teaspoons of arrowroot
  • Essential oils (optional; for the scent of the deodorant, you can use your favorite fragrance.)

Preparation Instructions

You can prepare this recipe in cold by simply mixing the ingredients.

Mix the baking soda with the arrowroot in a recipient. Add the coconut oil (Depending on its texture, you can use a fork to mash it and homogenize it with the baking soda and arrowroot. Add the essential oils to the mixture and mix the whole paste. You can store your brand new deodorant in a tightly sealed jar and keep in a cold room. Coconut oil liquefies at 76F, so if your room temperature exceeds that, you can safely store it in your refrigerator.

To apply it, roll it with a small teaspoon into a ball, roll it with your fingers and apply it to your underarms, where it will melt and soak in.

Second Recipe

This recipe requires a double boiler, so if you don’t feel like washing more dishes, you can try the other, simpler recipe.

Let’s have a look at the ingredients needed.

  • Baking soda (3 teaspoons)
  • Shea Butter (2 teaspoons)
  • Arrowroot/cornstarch (2 teaspoons)
  • Coconut Oil (2 teaspoons)

Instructions

Make a double boiler by placing a glass jar in a small pot of water. Bring the water to its boiling point and add the coconut oil and shea butter to the jar, allowing it to melt.

Turn of the fire and add the baking soda and cornstarch/arrowroot (if you don’t have either of these item in your house, you can use more baking soda). Stir it with a spoon until it’s completely smooth. Add your favorite essential oils to the mixture (lavender, orange, etc.).

You can let it cool off completely and put it in an old deodorant recipient, so you can apply it with ease.
